Mongolia's total population as of July 2007 is estimated by U.S. Census Bureau at 2,951,786 people ranking at around 138th in the world in terms of population. But the U.S. Department of State Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs uses the U.N. estimations instead of the U.S. Census Bureau estimations. United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Population Division estimates Mongolia's total population (mid. 2007) as 2,629,000 (11% less than the U.S. Census Bureau figure). UN estimates resemble those made by the Mongolian National Statistical Office (2,612,900, end of June 2007).

The Mongolian Geography
Mongolia is situated in the central part of the Asiatic continent (41°35'N - 52°09'N and 87°44'E -119°56"E), Mongolia's longest stretch from west to east is at 2,392 km., and from north to foremost southern point is 1,259 km. The country is bounded on the north by Russia and on the east, south, and west by China. It has a total area of 1,565,000 sq. km. It is the 19th largest country in terms of area in the world. It is also one of the largest mainland countries with no access to sea.
The topography of Mongolia consists mainly of a vast plateau with the elevation ranging from 914 to 1,524 meters (m) broken by mountain ranges in the north and west. The Altai Mountain in, the southwest rises to heights of 4,267 m above the sea.

I. Social indicators
According to the data of Ministry of Health, the births per 1000 population was 6.1, mortality per 1000 population was 1.6 and natural increase per 1000 population was 4.5 in the 1st quarter of 2010.
As of the 1st quarter 2010, the number of births (live birth) reached 16875 and increased by 540 or 3.3 percent and the number of mothers delivered children was 16823 and it has an increase of 545 or 3.3 percent, compared with the same period of the previous year at the national level. Compared with the same period of the previous year, the number of infant mortality reached 383 and it increased by 48 infants or 14.3 percent and the number of under-five mortality was 101 and increased by 54, while the number of maternal deaths shows 8 and it decreased by 4.

Mongolia is a parliamentary republic. The parliament is elected by the people and in turn elects the government. The president is elected directly. Mongolia's constitution guarantees full freedom of expression, religion, and others. Mongolia has a number of political parties, the biggest ones being the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) and the Democratic Party (DP).
